13th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Yuen Hing Food located in Dragon Centre, is set to close its doors, marking the end of an era for fans of its renowned two-dish rice. Founded in 1999, the restaurant gained fame for offering affordable meals, with patrons recalling its early days of “four dishes for HK$20.”
Cheng, the 70-year-old owner, revealed the decision to cease operations was driven by health concerns, stating that he can no longer manage the demanding responsibilities of running the business. His son, popular YouTuber FHProductionHK, clarified in a recent video that financial reasons were not behind the closure and encouraged potential successors to contact his mother about taking over the restaurant.
Despite rising ingredient costs, Cheng emphasised that his health issues, particularly declining eyesight, were the primary factors in the decision to close. He noted that staffing challenges also contributed, as the operation is small and not part of a larger chain.
The two-dish rice concept gained traction in Hong Kong following the 2003 SARS outbreak, when many unemployed chefs began opening their own establishments. Cheng is considered an authority on the dish’s evolution and believes its popularity will continue to grow.
Long-time customer Mr. Ng, a local resident, praised Yuen Hing Food for its generous portions and reasonable prices, noting its status as one of the busiest spots in the food court. As the restaurant prepares for its final days, he expressed a pragmatic outlook, stating that the community will adapt and new options will emerge.
