15th January 2025 – (Seoul) South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was formally arrested this morning by the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) on charges of insurrection. This marks the first time in South Korean history that a sitting president has been detained by an investigative agency.

The operation began earlier in the day when investigators arrived at the presidential residence in Yongsan around 4am. Despite attempts by Yoon’s security detail to block access, the CIO and police successfully entered the compound. Yoon’s representatives contested the legality of the arrest warrant, but the authorities proceeded with their actions, ultimately leading to Yoon’s arrest.

In response to the arrest, Yoon maintained that the investigation was unlawful, stating that his compliance was intended to prevent potential violence. His attorney proposed that Yoon voluntarily submit to questioning in lieu of arrest, but this offer was rejected by the CIO, which insisted on enforcing the warrant.

The political climate surrounding Yoon’s arrest is tense, with approximately 30 lawmakers from his ruling People Power Party and around 6,500 supporters gathering outside the presidential residence to form a human chain in a bid to obstruct the authorities. Police have warned that anyone impeding the arrest would face immediate detention.

Yoon had previously announced a state of emergency on 3rd January, a decision he rescinded just hours later. Following his impeachment by the National Assembly on 14th January, he had largely remained in seclusion, refusing to cooperate with investigators or comply with summonses. The current crisis represents the most severe political turmoil South Korea has faced in decades, raising concerns about the implications for governance and stability in the nation.
