9th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) At approximately 12.21pm today, a woman visited the Star Coin cryptocurrency exchange located at Admiralty Centre, 18 Harcourt Road, intending to convert her cryptocurrency into cash. However, she discovered that she was unable to complete the transaction, leading her to suspect she had fallen victim to a scam, with an estimated loss of around HK$2 million. The police have since arrived to investigate and have classified the case as a potential fraud.
According to reports, the woman had previously been introduced by an acquaintance to an online platform where she purchased cryptocurrency mining equipment and successfully exchanged her cryptocurrency for cash. However, upon her visit to the exchange today, staff noticed discrepancies in her information, preventing the cash-out.
Fearing she had been deceived, the woman promptly reported the incident to the authorities. Interestingly, during the investigation, her acquaintance reappeared online, and she was ultimately able to successfully cash out HK$15,000. Following further inquiries, law enforcement officials determined that the case likely does not involve criminal elements and have categorised it as an “incident” rather than a fraud case.
