12th January 2025 – (Los Angeles) At least 16 individuals have tragically lost their lives in the wake of raging wildfires that are engulfing Los Angeles County, the most densely populated county in the United States, as confirmed by local authorities on Saturday.

The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner published a sombre list of fatalities, indicating that the death toll from the wildfires has climbed to 16 as of Saturday evening.

Of the deceased, eleven victims were associated with the Eaton Fire, while the remaining five were discovered within the Palisades Fire zone.

The destructive Eaton Fire, which ignited on Tuesday evening, has ravaged 14,117 acres (equivalent to 57.1 square km) in the vicinity of Altadena and Pasadena. As of Saturday afternoon, containment efforts had secured a mere 15% progress.

According to a situational update from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the fire has persisted through the night, blazing across treacherous, inaccessible terrain characterised by dangerously arid vegetation. Aerial assessments suggest that roughly 7,081 structures may have faced damage or destruction in the fire’s wake.

In a similar vein, the Palisades Fire, the largest among a cluster of active wildfires in the Los Angeles region, has devoured 22,660 acres (approximately 91.7 square km) and obliterated over 5,300 structures since its inception on Tuesday. Presently, containment efforts have achieved an 11% success rate.

CAL FIRE has articulated that the primary focus remains on fortifying and enhancing containment perimeters, prioritising public safety and safeguarding structures. The agency warned of an anticipated resurgence of moderate to strong warm and dry Santa Ana winds on Tuesday and Wednesday, setting the stage for hazardous fire weather conditions.

Governor Gavin Newsom of California announced on Saturday an escalation in the deployment of the California National Guard to bolster firefighting operations. The public safety resources have been mobilised to combat the escalating infernos in Los Angeles, with 1,680 California National Guardsmen actively engaged in the region.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power disclosed on Saturday that a substantial portion of its hydrants in the Palisades region experienced a drop in pressure during the devastating wildfire outbreak this week, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, the region’s prominent newspaper.
