7th January 2025 – (Beijing) China’s Tibet region was struck by a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake, claiming at least 126 lives and leaving 188 injured. The central government has issued crucial directives to prioritise rescue efforts, minimize casualties, and ensure the safe relocation of affected communities for a secure winter. Russian President Putin has extended condolences, urging swift recovery for all those injured.
According to China Earthquake Networks Centre data, the earthquake affected multiple villages within a 5-kilometer radius, with an average altitude of about 4,259 meters. Hong Kong Observatory’s preliminary analysis reported a 7.1 magnitude quake in Tibet, with the epicentre approximately 160 kilometres southwest of Shigatse in the capital, Rikaze.
As rescue operations intensify, reports from locals describe the intense shaking experienced during the quake, with disruptions in communication and power in some areas. With numerous aftershocks recorded, rescue teams are navigating challenging conditions to assist those affected, with significant structural damage reported in several areas.
In response to the crisis, The Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) and Ministry of Finance have swiftly allocated 100 million yuan each in central disaster relief funds to support rescue and recovery efforts in the earthquake-affected regions. The Tibet earthquake disaster relief efforts are in full swing with various emergency response teams and resources mobilized to provide aid and support to the affected communities.
