13th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Robert Chung, the president and chief executive officer of the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI), is under investigation by the National Security Department for alleged assistance to an individual evading law enforcement. This morning, police arrived at Chung’s residence to conduct inquiries and are expected to take him in for further questioning.

This incident marks a significant development following the inclusion of former Deputy Chief Executive Chung Kim-wah on a wanted list announced by the National Security Department on 24th December, 2024. Chung Kim-wah, alongside other individuals, was implicated in a wider investigation concerning overseas Hong Kong residents.

On December 27, 2024, Chung Kim-wah addressed the media, asserting that his status as a wanted individual was unrelated to the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute. He has faced increased scrutiny since the police’s announcement, which has raised concerns about the implications for public discourse and research in Hong Kong.

In July 2024, Robert Chung indicated that his institute would continue its research on the Tiananmen Square incident, although he reaffirmed that findings would not be publicly disclosed. The reports generated from this research are intended for internal reference, with access granted to individuals or organisations for academic purposes, provided they adhere to legal stipulations.
