16th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong’s sporting landscape has been thrown into uncertainty following a police report linked to the planned visit of Spanish football giants FC Barcelona. The Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) has sought police assistance after the Winman Advertising and Entertainment Group, the alleged organiser of the event, disseminated a purported email from the park that was later found to be fabricated.
The controversy erupted when Winman claimed that its application for the stadium was rejected. In response, KTSP conducted a review of its email records and determined that it had never sent the alleged correspondence, prompting them to report the matter to the police. The Commercial Crime Bureau is now investigating, and reports indicate that individuals associated with Winman have been arrested.
KTSP has reiterated that it has not received any formal application from Winman, including the necessary documentation to cooperate with FC Barcelona. In a previous statement, the park confirmed it had received an inquiry from Winman but had not yet received the required application materials.
The saga began earlier this month when Winman announced plans for Barcelona to play in Hong Kong on 27th July. They asserted that they had reached an agreement with the club, which was later contested by KTSP. The park’s representatives stated that the venue was already booked for that date, allegedly for an event involving Premier League club Liverpool.
Edwin Wong, Winman’s CEO, has publicly expressed frustration over the situation, stating that a lack of communication has jeopardised the event. As the investigation unfolds, the future of the much-anticipated match remains uncertain, underscoring the complexities of arranging high-profile sporting events in Hong Kong.
