16th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is currently investigating a food poisoning cluster that has affected 22 individuals in Hong Kong. The CHP issued a reminder to the public regarding the importance of maintaining personal, food, and environmental hygiene to prevent foodborne illnesses.
The affected group comprises five males and 17 females, aged between 28 and 65, who reported symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and fever. These symptoms developed between 11 to 51 hours after dining at Kyukyoku Do, located in the Circle Tower on Tang Lung Street, Causeway Bay, on 12th January.
Of those impacted, 15 sought medical attention, although none required hospitalisation. Laboratory tests confirmed that stool samples from two individuals were positive for Norovirus.
Preliminary investigations by the CHP indicated that the affected diners consumed a variety of dishes, with epidemiological findings suggesting that raw oysters and crab salad may be the culprits. In response, staff from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) conducted an assessment of the restaurant and instructed it to cease serving the implicated food items. The FEHD also mandated a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the premises, alongside providing food safety and hygiene training to the restaurant staff.
