13th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A serious industrial accident at a construction site in Hong Kong’s Kai Tak development area has resulted in 11 workers being injured, with four individuals in critical condition. The incident occurred on 13th January at approximately 4pm, when a large bamboo scaffolding structure measuring 20 by 60 metres collapsed.
Five of the injured were transported to United Christian Hospital, where the condition of one man and two women has been classified as critical. Another man and woman are reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, six workers were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where one woman remains in critical condition, one man is in serious condition, one man is stable, and three men have since been discharged.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with multiple workers trapped beneath the debris. One female worker, who was tethered to a safety line, was found wedged between scaffolding and was reportedly half-conscious during her rescue. Eyewitness accounts noted the distress of those trapped, as colleagues voiced concerns over the precariousness of the situation.
The accident took place at the site of a new emergency hospital being built on Shing Cheong Road, with the scaffolding collapse prompting an immediate response from the Fire Services Department. The construction project is managed by the Hospital Authority and contracted to China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited.
In light of the incident, the Hospital Authority has mandated a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse and has halted scaffold work at the site until further notice. The authority has expressed its condolences to the injured workers and confirmed that appropriate medical care will be provided.
