22nd October 2021 – (Hong Kong) Following the Perseid meteor shower in mid-August, the Orionids meteor shower will take place in late October. It is understood that the Orionids meteor shower is very fast, reaching 66 kilometres per second, ranking second in the meteor shower.
According to estimates by the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Orionids meteor shower, one of the major meteor groups in 2021, will reach its peak today (22nd), and the best viewing time will start at about 10.30pm. The Hong Kong Space Museum points out that the dark sky is conducive for meteor observation. If citizens want to watch the Orionids meteor shower, they are recommended to go to the suburbs with less light pollution and wide views, such as Tai Mei Tuk, High Island Reservoir etc.
The Orionids meteor shower, often shortened to the Orionids, is the most prolific meteor shower associated with Halley’s Comet. The Orionids are so-called because the point they appear to come from, called the radiant, lies in the constellationOrion, but they can be seen over a large area of the sky. The Orionids are an annual meteor shower which last approximately one week in late October. In some years, meteors may occur at rates of 50–70 per hour.
