9th January 2025 – (Shenzhen) As cross-border exchanges between Hong Kong and mainland China continue to grow, many Hong Kong residents are exploring opportunities in cities like Shenzhen. One woman recently shared her experience of relocating to the Hongshan district of Shenzhen six months ago, where she rents a 400sqf duplex apartment. After paying her rent, she manages to live on a monthly budget of just 5,000 RMB, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of life in mainland China.
In her post, the woman emphasised the substantial improvements to her quality of life since moving. The duplex, which features two levels, allows her to create a bedroom on the upper floor, all at a significantly lower rent compared to Hong Kong. She outlined five key benefits of her new lifestyle, suggesting that living costs in Shenzhen are more manageable than in the notoriously expensive Hong Kong housing market.
Reactions from netizens were mixed. While some found her insights valuable and suggested that young people consider similar moves, others expressed concerns about the practicality of commuting back to Hong Kong for work. Critics pointed out that the daily travel between Shenzhen and Hong Kong could take up to three hours, which could be exhausting. Comments included sentiments like, “Time is money; it’s unreasonable to finish work at six and not get home until eight,” and “The commuting costs can outweigh the savings on rent.”
Conversely, many users supported her decision, stating that once they tried living in Shenzhen, they wouldn’t want to return to Hong Kong. One commenter noted, “I’ve been living here for almost six months; I can’t imagine going back to Hong Kong,” while another added that living in Shenzhen is preferable to residing in remote areas of Hong Kong.
