Hong Kong Customs seizes HK$20 million in drugs during recent operations, 2 men arrested

8th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong Customs conducted anti-narcotics operations on 7th January, uncovering two significant drug cases in Causeway Bay, Tai Po, and Yuen Long. Approximately 33 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, 1.9 kilograms of suspected “space oil drug,” 1 kilogram of suspected cocaine, 60 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 13 suspected “space oil drug” capsules, and 41 vape sticks containing suspected tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) were seized, with a total estimated market value of around $20 million. Two individuals believed to be connected to these cases were arrested.

In the first case, following an extensive investigation, Customs targeted a foreign national suspected of operating a drug storage facility in Causeway Bay. During a search of the premises, officers discovered approximately 33 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine valued at about $18 million. The 41-year-old man, who identified himself as a masseur, was arrested on-site and has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He is scheduled to appear at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on 9th January.

In the second case, Customs officers focused on a local man suspected of running a drug manufacturing operation in Yuen Long. The suspect was intercepted in Tai Po, where officers seized around 1 kilogram of suspected cocaine from plastic bags he was carrying. Following his arrest, a search of a premises in Yuen Long yielded an additional 1.9 kilograms of suspected “space oil drug,” 60 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 13 “space oil drug” capsules, 41 vape sticks containing suspected THC, and various drug manufacturing and packaging equipment, all valued at approximately $2 million. The 37-year-old suspect, who claimed to be unemployed, faces three counts of trafficking in a dangerous drug and one count of possession of a Part 1 poison. He will appear at the Fanling Magistrates’ Courts tomorrow.

With the Chinese New Year holidays approaching, Customs anticipates an increase in local drug demand and plans to intensify enforcement efforts to combat various drug trafficking activities leading up to the festive period.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence, carrying a maximum penalty of a $5 million fine and life imprisonment. Additionally, under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance, possession of any poison listed under Part 1 of the Poisons List without appropriate provisions is also an offence, punishable by a fine of $100,000 and up to two years in prison.
