14th January 2025 – (Nuuk) Greenland is poised to strengthen its defence and mining partnerships with the United States, according to Prime Minister Mute Egede. This initiative follows President-elect Donald Trump’s reiterated interest in the strategically significant and mineral-rich Arctic territory, which he described as an “absolute necessity” for the U.S.

In a press conference held in the capital, Nuuk, Egede expressed his government’s willingness to engage in dialogue with the incoming Trump administration regarding potential cooperation. However, he emphasised that decisions regarding Greenland’s sovereignty and land use ultimately rest with its own government.

When questioned about the expansion of U.S. military capabilities on the island, Egede stated, “Greenland’s independence is Greenland’s business, also in relation to the use of its land.” He affirmed that any agreements made would be at the discretion of Greenland.

To address US interests comprehensively, Egede has convened a meeting with leaders of Greenland’s political parties to formulate a united approach. “This is the first time Greenland has been listened to in an intense way,” he remarked, urging a calm and collective strategy to leverage the current situation.

While Trump has not ruled out the use of military or economic measures to assert U.S. control over Greenland, Vice President-elect JD Vance has dismissed the possibility of military intervention, reiterating a more diplomatic approach to the issue. The evolving dynamics surrounding Greenland’s geopolitical significance could reshape its international relations in the coming years.
