10th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Shiu Ka-chun, a former pro-democracy lawmaker in Hong Kong, has passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 55. His death occurred early today, following a battle with stomach cancer that he publicly disclosed in November last year.
In a recent social media post, Shiu revealed that he underwent emergency surgery to remove half of his stomach and nearby lymph nodes due to his diagnosis. He expressed his struggles with the illness, describing himself as a “half-stomach person” and acknowledging the long road ahead for his recovery. Despite the challenges, he remained optimistic about his ability to navigate through his health crisis.
Shiu, who was originally a social worker, began his teaching career as a lecturer at the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2007. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 2016, representing the Social Welfare functional constituency. A notable figure in the 2014 Occupy Central protests, he faced legal repercussions for his activism, including an eight-month prison sentence in 2019 for public nuisance charges.
In November 2020, following the disqualification of several pro-democracy legislators, Shiu resigned from the Legislative Council along with 14 colleagues in protest.
