9th January 2025 – (Brussels) On Thursday, Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, emphasised the need to respect Greenland’s sovereignty after President-elect Donald Trump suggested he might consider military action to take control of the Arctic island.
“Greenland is part of Denmark,” Kallas stated during a press briefing. “We must respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Greenland.”
Trump raised concerns earlier this week at a news conference when he refrained from dismissing the possibility of military intervention regarding both the Panama Canal and Greenland, which he has expressed interest in controlling. The Arctic island, rich in minerals and oil, is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a member of the EU, which is contemplating its own path to independence.
Following Trump’s remarks, Kallas spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who reassured her that relations between Denmark and the United States remain strong. “She noted that it’s positive for the president-elect to take an interest in the Arctic, a region significant for both security and climate change,” Kallas added.
Denmark’s foreign minister indicated on Wednesday that Copenhagen is open to discussions with the U.S. to protect American interests in the Arctic.
Trump’s comments have stirred unease across Europe as it braces for challenges following his inauguration on 20th January. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated, “Borders must not be moved by force. This principle applies to every country, whether in the East or the West.” He further expressed that there is growing concern among European partners regarding recent U.S. statements, underscoring the necessity for solidarity.
