15th January 2025 – (Istanbul) Eleven individuals have died in hospitals in Istanbul, Türkiye’s largest city, within the past 24 hours after consuming counterfeit alcohol, local media reported on Tuesday. The state-run Anadolu news agency revealed that 38 people, including 26 foreign nationals, sought medical treatment at various hospitals across the city due to health issues related to the consumption of fake alcohol, with 11 fatalities confirmed.
Authorities have detained two suspects of Turkmen nationality, allegedly involved in the sale of counterfeit alcohol at their workplace in the Basaksehir district. Both individuals were arrested during a police raid that uncovered approximately 50 litres of counterfeit alcohol, along with 36 drug pills, five pieces of narcotic substances, a precision scale, opium resin, counterfeit migrant identity cards, and a significant quantity of medical drugs.
The suspects are currently under investigation on multiple charges, including “causing death by negligence,” “drug trafficking,” “producing and selling counterfeit alcohol,” possession of “unidentified medical drugs,” “human trafficking,” and “forgery of official documents,” as reported.
