
18th June 2023 – (Manila) All 120 people on board the M/V Esperanza Star ferry have been rescued after it caught fire while sailing from Siquijor island to Bohol island in the central Philippines. The ferry was carrying 65 passengers and 55 officers and crew members when the fire broke out at dawn on Sunday. Photos and video released by the coast guard show flames and black smoke billowing from two decks at one end of the ferry. A fishing boat and another vessel were nearby, and coast guard personnel on another vessel used a water cannon to try to put out the fire.
The coast guard declared the fire out by around 2am GMT, and the whereabouts and conditions of the rescued passengers and crew members were not disclosed. Two coast guard vessels involved in firefighting and rescue operations were still in waters in the vicinity of the fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
