14th November 2025 – (New York) An airline pilot has recently disclosed the financial rewards associated with his profession, shedding light on the significant earnings that come from navigating complex air travel. In a candid video, Garrett, a YouTube content creator and pilot, detailed his hourly rate and the intricacies of his earnings based on various flight routes.
Garrett highlighted that he is compensated at a rate of $213.87 per hour, a figure that reflects the critical nature of his responsibilities. He emphasised, however, that the job entails more than just flying; pilots must account for substantial ‘time away from base’—the duration spent travelling to and from flights.
For instance, Garrett showcased a preferred route from LaGuardia Airport in New York to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. He explained that he ‘deadheaded’—travelling as a passenger to position himself for the flight. For this particular trip, he earned a total of $1,556, encompassing both the deadheading and the return flight. The entire process took just over nine hours, allowing for a quick turnaround.
In contrast, he noted a flight from JFK Airport to Phoenix, which could involve a 24-hour layover, translating to a longer ‘time away from base’ despite a shorter flying time. This highlighted the variance in profitability across different routes.
Garrett also mentioned that pilots can increase their earnings by advancing to captain positions or choosing specific flights that offer better pay. In a separate video, he revealed that a longer journey from Phoenix to JFK netted him $5,500, factoring in additional elements such as holiday pay.
His insights underscore the complexities and rewards of a career that, while lucrative, demands extensive training and commitment.
